Festkonzert
‘Off to new worlds!’ could be the motto for the two symphonies in this concert. Ludwig van Beethoven's 1st Symphony op. 21, premiered in Vienna in 1800, opens up the fascinating cosmos of 19th century German symphonic music. Based on Haydn's London symphonies, it conquers new musical terrain with courage and optimism.
Antonín Dvorák's 9th Symphony op. 95, premiered in New York in 1893, opens up new terrain not only musically, but also geographically. Dvorák worked as director of the New York Conservatory for almost three years and achieved a harmonic synthesis of elements of Bohemian folk music and American spirituals in his last symphony.
